Providing high-quality preventive care means local businesses can retain and attract top talent while building lasting connections with their employees,” said Matt Elliott, president of Bank of America Michigan. “This new initiative builds on U.S. Bank’s long-standing partnership with Wayne State University by helping to reshape health care delivery for thousands of workers in Detroit. This is especially important because we know that small and medium-sized businesses are the engines of growth for our economy and their success is rewarding for everyone.”
“We’re helping companies help their employees, and with these new electric vehicles, we’re doing so with minimal environmental impact,” said Phillip Levy, M.D., M.P.H., WHMU program leader and Wayne State University assistant vice president for translational Science and chief innovation officer for Wayne Health. “Healthier employees mean healthier businesses, which means a healthier economy for the Detroit area. We thank Bank of America for helping us move from crisis response to destination care and for empowering these businesses to provide high-quality, affordable health care to their employees.”
A pilot program providing health screenings and access to health care for more than half of Detroit Chassis’ workforce demonstrates the potential impact of the program. In addition to free health screenings, COVID-19 testing and vaccines, each WHMU will offer preventive care services, chronic disease medication management, health and patient education resources, and referrals to primary care physicians and social services.
Each vehicle will be staffed by four personnel, including a registered nurse, medical/research assistant, and patient and family health advocate. In addition, each vehicle is equipped with two on-board telemedicine areas, one of which is ADA-compliant and allows remote access to physicians, nurse practitioners and pharmacists as needed at any time.
“This model is transformative and has tremendous growth potential,” said Levy. “As we add more partner companies, mobile units and sites, we will continue to build a new health care workforce and a new model of health care that provides affordable and accessible options for the people they live, work or play with.”
